Abstract

Three‐dimensional (3‐D) computer aided design (CAD) and its integration with project schedules (4‐D CAD) are promising technologies in design and construction. This paper represents a second study on the effectiveness of visualization on project planning. While the initial study investigated 2‐D, 3‐D and walk‐thru technologies’ impact on project schedule development, the subsequent study reported herein, focuses on the impact of 3‐D/4‐D visualization on project schedule review. Experimental results provide quantitative evidence of the advantages of 3‐D/4‐D representations for schedule review for construction projects.

Abstract

Looks at recent research into children’s media consumption, highlights the importance of media literacy, and reports on an industry‐related media education programme; the research is tending to show that children are deciding what and when they watch television and other media. Develops, on the basis of these findings, a model of self‐supervised media engagement which is characterised by a lack of adult mediation. Argues that media literacy is important because it helps children become critical viewers of advertising and programming on their own; media literacy involves information processing skills and as such may be the most important life skill in the age of the internet. Introduces the UK Media Smart programme, which is industry funded and since 2002 has provided educational materials to help children think critically about advertising and other media issues.

Abstract

Purpose

While traders of agricultural products are known to often exercise market power, this power has rarely been quantified for developing countries. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to derive a measure, the authors estimate the traders’ revenue functions and calculate the marginal value products directly from them. The authors subsequently find the determinants affecting their individual market power.

Findings

Results show that market power at the traders’ level exists and is substantial. This market power is amplified in situations of extreme remoteness, and weakens with increasing market size.

Originality/value

An exceptional data set with detailed information on the business practices of rubber traders in Jambi, Indonesia is employed with an innovative methodology to directly estimate revenue functions.
